Recent Interview (released June 11): Ali Mahmudi
Sponge Farming & Coral restoration at Marine Cultures
Sponge farming and the restoration of coral reefs are top priorities for MarineCultures.org in Jambiani, Zanzibar. Project Manager, Ali Mahmudi will share some of the challenges his organization has faced in their pioneering efforts to create an ecologically sustainable new profession and increase economic opportunities for women in the community. Rising sea temperatures and coral bleaching has also affected the organization’s efforts to reforest damaged and endangered reefs which has led to the development of new transplantation techniques and the cultivation of corals that are more resistant to higher temperatures.
